We’ve been busy writing in first grade! Here is one student’s writing from today about Darth Vader. We’ve been practicing “tricky sounds” in our writing. Today we talked about “ed” word endings. This student circled the “ed” word he wrote!

Today in first grade the children had math centers to explore math concepts. At one center they used our online math program Dream Box. At another station they tried to make different sized triangles with geoboards. At the third station, first graders used Fact Triangles to come up with all the fact families that matched those numbers. At the final station the first graders used pattern blocks to do some beginning work in fractions! First graders used shapes inside of shapes to figure out how many fit inside the bigger shape. Here is a picture of one student figuring out how many triangles fit inside the hexagon.
I can’t believe it’s already March! As Frog and Toad would say, Spring is just around the corner!
We have been working on All About books about our school. We started this project by brainstorming three different kinds of nonfiction writing we could include in our book (How To, Different Kinds of Things and Diagrams). After we brainstormed some things for each category, we began to write How To pages. Later in the week the first graders learned about “Different Kinds of Things” writing. One student chose to write about the different rooms at our school and what happens there!
We’re back from mid-winter break!
This week we are finishing up our balls and ramps unit in science. Today the first graders used a board, blocks (milk cartons with washers taped to the bottom for weight) and a plastic cup to try to create a ramp that would move different balls. Here is one creative way a first grade team tried to design their ramp.
Later this week the first graders will use all the toilet paper and paper towel rolls families have sent in to build their own ramp system!
Thursday is our 100th Day of School and Friday is Dr. Seuss’s birthday! It’s a busy week in first grade!
Happy Valentine’s Day!
Today the first graders spent time writing compliments to their classmates in honor of Valentine’s Day. Big pieces of paper with each first graders name were set out on the tops of desks. Students walked around and wrote compilments to each other on the pieces of paper. Our class has been working hard to use nice words and give compliments to the other kids in our class. We spent Valentine’s Day filling each other’s buckets!
The first graders are now deep into our balls and ramps science unit. Yesterday we explored the idea of force and tried to move a ping pong ball and a super ball with a straw. We tried to see which ball was easier to move and we worked to see if we could blow hard enough to make either ball knock down a glue stick.
Every time we do a science exploration we spend some time writing about it! Today we wrote about what we found yesterday in our science notebooks. Here is one student’s writing about which ball was easier to move and which ball was harder to move.
“I think the ping pong ball is easier to move because it was small and it was a sphere. I think the super ball was harder to move because it was 5 cubes [its weight!] and medium [its size].”
